Herring Neck Trading Co.

A new tradition in local trade.

Our story started over 100 years ago.

The vision for Herring Neck Trading Co. started here in Herring Neck when Sir William Coaker founded the Fishermens Protective Union (FPU) after Coaker witnessed the injustice towards fishermen by merchants throughout Newfoundland.. The FPU was founded on November 3rd, 1908 at the Orange Lodge in Herring Neck after an hour-long speech by Coaker and an invitation for those interested in joining the Union to stay behind. 19 people did, and the Union was formed. By 1914, the Union boasted more than 21,000 members in 206 councils around Newfoundland.

In 1910 the Union decided to establish "cash stores" for any branch council with over 200 members. By 1911 there were five cash stores, buying fish and selling goods at cash prices. Later that year the Union incorporated the Union Trading Company. A Union Trading Co. storefront was established in Herring Neck in 1912, and by 1919 it had 4,421 shareholders with 40 stores throughout outport Newfoundland.

A new tradition.

Inspired by the work of Sir William Coaker and the Union Trading Co., a new venture was born.

The Herring Neck Trading Co. is an online store which allows local vendors throughout Newfoundland to sell their goods through an online platform.
